Four artists’ work inspired by the shapes, structures and colours of the landscapes that surround us.

'The Forest is Ours' Astrig Akseralian
The Language of Landscape brings together four artists whose work spans a century of change in how we see, paint, and inhabit the land. From the classic landscapes of Rowland Hilder, the pre-eminent painter of the English countryside in winter, and Gordon Rushmer, recipient of the Rowland Hilder Award, to the contemporary visions of Susan Mulley and Astrig Akseralian, who reinterpret the shapes, structures, and colours of the landscapes that surround us, the exhibition explores the evolving language of landscape painting.

Through their contrasting approaches, these artists reveal how the genre has developed – reflecting shifts in our relationship with the land. Changing farming techniques, increased leisure time, and the right to roam have all altered how we experience and connect with the natural world.

The Language of Landscape invites viewers to consider how we continue to find meaning, memory, and identity within the landscapes we inhabit and imagine.
