Canterbury Roman Museum is built around the remains of an impressive Roman town house that had a beautiful Mosaic floor. Mosaics are patterns or pictures made from lots of small coloured stones or tile cubes. In latin these individual pieces are called ‘tesserae’ which is where we get the word ‘tessellate’ from.
Why did the Romans make mosaics? What were their designs like?
Make your own Roman inspired mosaic by cutting up small coloured paper squares and creating your own design from the pieces.
