The Anglo Saxons took inspiration from animals such as birds, fish and serpents when they made their beautiful designs. We have some very interesting examples at The Beaney such as this mount. It’s possible that this design is a bird, can you see it’s beak and it’s eye? If it is a bird then it’s likely to be a crow or a raven which were symbols of Woden.

It’s thought that this gold pendant is in the form of a dragon! The dragon (or Draca in Anglo Saxon english) was an important symbol in both Anglo Saxon and Viking culture.

The Anglo Saxons thought of dragons as guardians of burial grounds and treasure! This idea has influenced a lot of literature throughout history including stories that are very popular today.
