Reculver School pupils in LEGO competition glory

Reculver Primary School has been announced as the winner of The Beaney’s ‘Brickmas’ exhibition LEGO model competition.

The school wins a LEGO Education Classroom set worth over £1500, supported by Fenwick.

The free ‘Brickmas’ exhibition featured BRICKLIVE Christmas models including a life size Santa in his workshop, reindeer and elves. And as part of this special community project last Christmas, the public were asked to donate any unwanted pre-loved LEGO-compatible bricks, which arrived in their thousands.

These generous donations were sent off to local schools so children could help recreate Santa’s grotto at The Beaney and to promote creativity and STEM learning. Fourteen schools, including one home learning group, took part to create festive models for the exhibition.

The public were then invited to vote for their favourite model while visiting the exhibition.

Reculver Primary School Headteacher, Mrs Jenny Ashley-Jones, said: “The children had a great time building their ‘Merry Brickmas’ model, and winning the competition was a real bonus, for which they and we are so proud.

“They thought really carefully about their design, sorting the bricks to see what sort they had, and which colours, before making their design. The finished product was really Christmassy, fitting the brief perfectly.

“It was so lovely to be able to visit The Beaney and see it on display alongside all of the other models – a really lovely Christmas visit to make. Well done to the children, and Mrs Mount, their teacher.”

As well as the exhibition and schools competition, a free Christmas trail around Canterbury also took place in partnership with the BID, featuring festive brick models hidden amongst shop windows.

Canterbury City Council’s lead councillor for culture, Cllr Joe Howes, said: “This was a glorious celebration of two things loved by many people – brick building and Christmas – and we were very pleased to have provided such a fantastic free event, enjoyed by more than 7,000 visitors to The Beaney.

“We brought together schools, families and businesses to create something very special, literally brick by brick, at what was a difficult time.

“Congratulations to the children and teachers at Reculver School and we hope you enjoy the prize.”
