The Smallfilms Gallery

A temporary gallery space celebrating work by the Award winning Smallfilms duo – Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate. See old favourites such as Bagpuss, Clangers, Noggin the Nog and Ivor the Engine alongside brand new items on display.

  • The Smallfilms Gallery

We are delighted to host a family gallery showcasing work by Smallfilms duo, Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, who created iconic children’s programmes such as Bagpuss and Clangers from studios near Canterbury.

The gallery celebrates the huge output of Smallfilms from small rural roots and gives fascinating insights into early, pre-CGI animation. The partnership and films produced received much recognition including Doctorates for Oliver, Peter (and Bagpuss!) It also generated a considerable output of books, comics and other merchandise over the years, examples of which are included in the exhibition.

The Smallfilms gallery has been created in close conjunction with the Firmin and Postgate families and Canterbury Christ Church University and will on display at The Beaney until at least January 2030.

Funded by Arts Council England and Leverhulme Trust.
